BeautyRival – DJ Soda, the South Korean DJ famous for her stylish and glamorous looks, recently shared a deeply personal story. A hair bleaching accident last month caused severe damage—almost 90% of her hair melted and broke off. The traumatizing experience left her nearly bald and deeply distressed. In a video shared by hairstylist Kiu Saem, Soda revealed she had never experienced such hair breakage in her ten years as a blonde.
What was supposed to be a routine makeover turned into a nightmare. Instead of gradually lifting her color over multiple sessions (as usual), the bleach turned her hair bright lemon yellow immediately. “From the front it looked okay, but at the back a lot of hair snapped off,” Soda explained. Professionals say the damage began during the initial bleaching stage, a result of misjudged application or inadequate processing time.

The incident took a heavy emotional toll. Hwang So Hee (DJ Soda’s real name) admitted she cried almost every day for two weeks. She retreated to Germany to cope with her depression and social anxiety, fearing people would notice her damaged scalp. “As a woman, my self-esteem dropped drastically,” she said. “I even became socially anxious, too scared to meet people.”
Fortunately, Soda found a skilled stylist in Kiu Saem who helped restore her appearance. The treatment involved gentle fading, hairpieces, and a new haircut tailored to her head shape. Although not fully growing her hair back, the makeover lifted her confidence significantly. Soda now feels more comfortable leaving home and interacting with fans again.

Beyond hair recovery, the experience became a turning point. Soda used this incident to dispel stereotypes about her lifestyle—despite being a DJ, she doesn’t party or drink. “People think I love going out, but I can’t drink at all,” she shared. She reflected that the hair fiasco gave her space for introspection. “I never imagined something like this would happen in my life,” she said, emphasizing resilience and self-care.
Despite the trauma, Soda received overwhelming support from fans worldwide. Messages of encouragement helped her find strength to keep going. She writes that many people who don’t even know her personally reached out. This network of kindness helped her regain self-worth and move forward. Her journey now stands as a reminder that even in crises, recovery and growth are possible.
